Treatment and prevention of chapped lips

Around the world and in all countries, the onset of cold varied effects. While the cold brings blizzards and snow storms in the Canada, United States and Northern Europe, she brings just a respite in the warm weather in Equatorial regions. However it also brings with it a common problem of the lips Chapped or Cheilitis.

Chapped lips or Cheilitis is a medical condition in which a person lips start drying or cracking mainly on higher layers. Sometimes, the skin itself stands in small sections. The only reason for this is the loss of moisture in the upper layers of the lips. Excessive drying of the lips is usually characterized by slight bleeding and pain.

Chapped lips is caused by a variety of reasons which include:

(1) Cold: these weather conditions increase the rate of loss of moisture in the mouth, as the air is dry.

(2) Licking habits: many people have the habit of licking their lips. Licking however, does not hydrate the lips; in fact the enzymes present in saliva can really undermine the humidity of the mouth.

(3) Deficiency in vitamin B2: vitamin B2 plays an important role in various cellular processes and metabolism of nutrients. Chapped lips is a common symptom that indicates the absence of vitamin B2 in the body (this condition is called Ariboflavinosisâ and is very rare).

(4) The reactions of certain medications: overdoses of some medical drugs as supplements of vitamin a and other drugs containing retinoids based compounds are known to cause the chapped lips.

As indicated in the title of this article, solutions for chapped lips are easy and are the following:

(1) Not to lick your lips: reading (2) above and let go of the misconception that you have.

(2) Use a petroleum jelly: a combination of an oil/cream jelly and a moisturizing, if it is available in a single product is the best. Cream based jelly prevent moisture from escaping, while the moisturizer helps increase the moisture content of the lips.

(3) Drink plenty of water: it is not fair to chapped lips, keep your body well hydrated will help increase the overall health of your body.

(4) Basic home remedies include, but are not limited to: application of beeswax, honey, butter or vitamin e base oil.

(5) Use of red lips/balm: many of these actually include moisturizers as well.

(6) Good quantities of vitamins B2 and e and iron effectively help to prevent these diseases of the skin.

To summarize, chapped lips is a condition that is easily preventable. Simply apply a bit of general common sense and some above mentioned simple remedies to make sure that your lips are still in good health even in unsuitable weather conditions.
