Do you ever back on your childhood learning experiences? What memories does it bring to you? I asked these questions many times to teachers, parents, friends and family members. The answers usually revolve around projects or activities which were creative risk with some small (or big!). There is always an emotional memory, whether positive or negative, which maintains and keeps.
Thinking about how we engage children in experiencing life brings to mind the need for photography, enriching experiences. The arts are a wonderful way to support a child's creativity and wonder. Here is a simple to use, even if you don't feel comfortable with the idea of "Arts". So often the arts are held up and out of reach, but we're all creative beings! Take a moment to perhaps a step out of your comfort zone and express themselves through the eyes (and experience hands-on art!) with a baby!
View/explore:
• Take a walk outside
• Watch the objects around the House
• Visit a Museum
• Play on a playground
Take some time when you do a view with a child or a group of children. Carry the card (or notebook) and pencils/markers, crayons. Draw what you see while encouraging children to draw what they see. Talk about all the comments and drawings by asking questions such as; What you saw? I speak of design. What made you watch that object? As you draw on your card to show what you saw with your own eyes?
Create:
Visual Arts: art materials Which you already have at home? Crayons, markers, pencils, paper, clay, paint, string? If possible, have a variety of materials available. Get creative! Children will have many ideas now after observing and exploring the environment and recording their ideas on paper. These savings! Then they can use their observations to create a 3D sculpture, a painting, drawing, more elaborate. Making their observations "visible" will add to the memory and detail of observation.
Drama:
Using their observations, children can recreate the scene. What you might say the leaf they have lured the tree? What is the thought of swing? Everything that they have attracted can be brought to life! Encourage children to look back at their designs and remember. What could say drawing? Children are natural storytellers. Let them look back on their work and tell you what I remember.
Dance music:
From their designs, children can choose a line, the shape or object and recreate that form with their bodies. Taking 3 shapes from their drawings and their bodies to make each of these forms in movement is a choreographed dance! Now, what music should work with this new dance? CDs can be played, children can sing or hum a tune, tools can be made or bought cheaply to support dance with music. Alternatively, music can be chosen that supports their design. There is no limit!

While the experience is of utmost importance, presenting a product, either through Visual Arts, theatre, dance and/or music, is a wonderful way to gain recognition for effort well done. Sharing an artwork brings alive for the interpretation of others. This is a valuable way to express what was in the mind of the artist and can now be "seen" by others. The arts are really interactive and children can earn much sharing their artwork. So hang up those drawings, watch, listen to the stories and hear the music. Enjoy life living time well spent through the arts.
