Tips for travel to NYC with a toddler

Written By anfaku01 on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 | 10:48 AM

During our trip to NYC, I learned that NYC is truly the most non-kids friendly city in the United States:

While meeting up with friends for a brunch also have a little girl, we had to wait longer because we need two highchairs, so more space requiredObviously that most of the sites are not designed to facilitate access strollers. You will need to climb and descend stairs much. You're lucky if you can find subways with elevatorsWe barely remained at home and has already received a complaint from the neighbouring below us because my son was running around the apartment

Here are some tips on how to survive traveling to NYC with a toddler, especially if you're a small town like me.

1 Bring umbrella stroller
Umbrella stroller is the best because it is so easy to handle and light weighted. You can easily carry the stroller umbrella (with your child in it) and mount and dismount the Metro. If you are travelling with a baby, the chance is that you are better off with a sling or baby carrier. I didn't see anyone passes with a large travel system. Similarly, think about putting your baby in a car seat and to tie in a cab of taxi as people might laugh at you. Most New Yorkers use Bugaboo stroller, once again due to its light weight and maneuverability. But if you are just visiting, why spend hundreds of dollars if you only need in your hometown? Thus, you can wait until your baby is old enough to be put in an umbrella stroller or a carrier sling or baby. Umbrella stroller Maclaren brand is quite common for New Yorkers as it is lightweight, maneuverable, and the storage basket under.

2 Make stroller Weather Shield everywhere
It is basically a plastic covering your stroller. Of course as an Ohioan, I am used to go around the world by car. Here in New York, we walk much and went around the world either by bus or metro. Parking was a hassle and traffic is just a waste of time. Having said that I cannot really did not prepare for bad weather. This weather stroller shield is to prevent rain, wind and cold temperatures. You can get it at any pharmacy for less than $15.00.

3. Need a nanny? Go to Sittercity.com
My husband and I had a ticket to see David Letterman show. It is obvious that children not allowed, we find it difficult to find a babysitter for our son because our cousin had a class at the time. Naively, I thought that I could find a place as the mango, which is an hourly childcare centre. Turns out New Yorkers most use rulers as space is very rare and open a daycare can cost lots of money. Fortunately, our friends, who live in the Queens, agreed to watch our son for the day. Therefore, we had two hours of Harlem Queens to file our son and directed towards Manhattan to watch the show. It was worth however, but in case you need a babysitter, you would be better find sittercity.com.

4 Public toilets are a challenge.
I also learned that not all public places in New York offer a public toilet. You have best chances to find a Starbucks, major department stores and hotels. Just act like you're staying it or claim that you want to buy something, but change notice and on foot. In addition, New Yorkers are too busy to pay attention anyway.

5. An emergency door in Subways
In the revolving door is any how tiny it is is not your stroller. Sometimes you can apply to the ticket agent to let you through the emergency door. However when they are not around or you are in a hurry to catch the train, just push the door to rescue yourself. The alarm will make a loud noise but trust me, nobody cares!

6 Avoid the Metropolitan Museum of Art and all the Places of Non-kids Friendly
You are not authorized to nothing touching the dishes and good chance to tell your toddler only way to reach these interesting pieces of art! There are so many places which is kids friendly such as the Museum of children, Central Park, FAO Schwarz, etc. The dishes, or the Metropolitan Museum of Art is certainly not one of them! There are also a few cases where we are setting much eating, given that our son was too strong. Honestly I pretend that nothing happened.

Remember, don't let the Big Apple intimidates you! You can still have a good time in New York, as long as you are flexible, not expect too much of your toddler and learn to live as New Yorkers.
